Jodrell Bank

Jodrell Bank, originally uploaded by Smallbrainfield.

It's a humbling thing to see. A huge piece of engineering, constructed in the 1950s and still in use by scientists today.
Amazingly it's still the third largest moveable radio telescope ever built.

The only thing I can liken visiting it to is being in an episode of Quatermass or something Gerry Anderson made, not Thunderbirds, possibly Captain Scarlet. There's a small visitors centre and a cafe, but the Lovell telescope is the star. Leave the kids in the playground by the car-park and just go and marvel.
